About Boston University

For over 150 years Boston University has served as an outstanding institute of higher learning. Although the private university is historically affiliated with the United Methodist Church, today it functions largely as a nonsectarian institution. It is one of the largest private universities in the country, with over 31,000 students attending. The university prides itself on research, maintaining an RU/VH Research University Carnegie Classification, and spends millions of dollars per year on research.

Boston University received its start as the Newbury Biblical Institute in Newbury, Vermont in 1839. In 1847 it moved to Concord, New Hampshire, and in 1869 it was officially named the Boston Theological Institute, which was absorbed into a common Boston University in 1871. The Great Boston Fire of 1872 destroyed the majority of the university, and the insurance companies covering them had gone bankrupt. The university was forced to establish buildings throughout the cheaper areas of the city until the school, under President Lemuel Murlin, bought the area around the Charles River that now forms the Boston University campus at the start of the 20th century. Since that time, the university has continued to expand and add more buildings and departments.

Today Boston University offers bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees in eighteen schools and colleges. Some schools have been around since the beginning of the university, such as the School of Theology, founded in 1839, and the School of Medicine, founded in 1849, and those founded in more recent years, such as the School of Public Health in 1976, and the School of Hospitality Administration in 1981. It is regularly ranked in the top 50 among national universities and between 54th and 70th in the world depending on ranking institution. Nationally it is also ranks in the top fifty for public health graduate schools, law school, social work school, medical school, business school, and engineering schools.

The university also boasts seven Nobel Prize winners, such as Martin Luther King, Jr. who earned a PhD in 1955 and twenty-two Pulitzer Prize winners. Other significant alumni include Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the first African American woman to become a certified doctor; William Cohen, the Secretary of Defense under Bill Clinton; Gary Locke, the current Commerce Secretary, Bill O'Reilly of the O'Reilly Factor; and many other radio and television personalities and politicians. Among the faculty there have been many names including Alexander Graham Bell, Elie Wiesel, Isaac Asimov, Howard Zinn, and Andrew Bacevich.

There are several satellite campuses internationally and domestically. There is a campus in Brussels, Belgium; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; London, United Kingdom; Sydney, Australia; Los Angeles, California; and Washington, D.C. These campuses provide ideal opportunities for study abroad opportunities, and attract many students in international specialties, as well as international students, leading to diverse places for studying.

Athletically, the school mascot is the Boston terrier, Rhett. The athletic teams compete in Division I sports, offering basketball, cross country, golf, ice hockey, soccer, and swimming, just to name a few. The men's hockey team is the most successful, having won five NCAA championships. The school noticeably lacks a football team, which was disbanded in 1997 to save money for the John Hancock Student Village and new athletic complex. The women's teams also benefitted from the cut, which saw a great deal of funding increase. The school also offers a number of club level sports, such as ultimate Frisbee, kung fu, snowboarding, and figure skating.
